golden scribbles

"i feel the meaning of life is to be happy, grateful and humble.
to grow, succeed and fail.
care about one another,
help yourself and others if you can along the way.
focus on the positive.
say [eff] off to your negatives
and no matter how bad life can be
enjoy your life."

attn: andrew jenks

thank you.
thank you for wanting to be
"a filmmaker that is able to capture what my generation thinks,
how they act and what they ultimately stand for."
what you are doing with your show
is what i want to do with my writing.
"every young person i meet has a unique way of speaking to our generation.
their story is personal but their message is universal:
to make a difference and leave their own unique stamp on society.
world of jenks represents the voice of a generation..."

i just saw this episode.
it was the first i'd ever seen.
i was left inspired.
wow.

late night musings.

hello world.
today was a good day.
i had the opportunity to volunteer at friday's kids.
what's friday's kids you might ask?
here:
"We are a nonprofit organization providing respite care to families who have children with special needs. On Friday and Saturday evenings, caregivers bring their children to Friday's Kids while they enjoy some well deserved time off. Our volunteers spend one-on-one time with the children while parents get an evening to finish the laundry, run errands, spend time with their spouse, or simply relax."
i don't think i could have picked a better way to spend my friday night.
i learned a lot from those kids.
mostly patience
and noticing the little things in life that make it magical.
thanks kids.
for reminding me to love every single minute of life.

you are my sunshine.

I can't believe she's actually SIXTEEN!!
I feel ancient.
It's hard to believe that the little girl who used to sing a never-ending song titled "Sometimes" is old enough to date, drive, and own a cell phone.

Ashley.
I am so incredibly proud of you.
You posses this quiet strength I envy.
I applaud you for making a name for yourself in a school that already knows "The Porters."
Show them that white is just as good as brown.
Let them know you don't intend on living in a shadow but making your own.
You are wise beyond your years.
You inspire me.
Thank you for listening, giggling, and crying with me.
I hope when I grow up I can be like you.
I love you.

g-unit

Martha Tess Porter has many names in my household.  Among them are: Grandma, G-Ma, G-Unit, Gram, Marth, and sometimes Ashley refers to her as a "cracka" when she says, "us cracka's got to stick together!"
This incredible woman is my grandmother.
I came home today as a surprise to my family.  Nobody knew.  She came out of her room to tell my dad that he should bring the trash cans in because tonight was going to be especially windy {50-60 mph believe it or not!}.  I told her I would tell him and she kind of did a double take.  As she asked me what I was doing home, we hugged.  That was probably one of the best hugs I've ever received from my granma.  I felt like she was genuinely happy to see me.  I could feel her love for me and knew that she missed me.
My grandma is one of the most incredible people I know.  She has done everything.  Been a reporter, worked for the F.B.I.  You name it, she's done it.  I wish I could have her drive for life.
One day a few weeks ago I decided to call her.  We talked for a bit about school and work, and the latest book she was reading, then we started talking fashion.  She told me she wanted to go buy jeans but they were "all so ugly!"  She started talking about the fashions she was watching on TV.  I asked her what channel she was wacthing and tuned in on the same one.  We probably spent about 7 minutes talking about what we liked or didn't like about each outfit that came on.  :)
I love it when we just talk.  I know I can always knock on her door when I'm home and sit in her room for an hour at a time and we can just talk.  I'm so grateful for the relationship I have developed with her.  She is such an inspiration.  Grandma has been through so much it almost doesn't seem fair, but she has come out stronger because of it.
Golly I love that woman.  I hope I can grow up to be half the woman she is.
